What a $200 keyboard actually buys you

Most of the price gap between a $40 keyboard and a $200 one is not the switches. It is the case, and the case is what you can actually hear and feel.

Mechanical keyboards are the rare category where the enthusiast market and the office market have drifted so far apart that they no longer use the same vocabulary. Enthusiasts talk about gasket mounts and foam stacks. Office buyers see a $200 price tag next to a $40 one and reasonably conclude that someone is being had.

Both are right about different things. Here is where the money actually goes.

Switches are the cheap part

A set of 90 mechanical switches costs a manufacturer somewhere between $9 and $25. They are the component every listing leads with, and they are close to the least expensive thing in the product.

They do matter, but the axis is preference rather than quality. Linear switches move straight down; tactile switches have a bump; clicky ones add a noise most offices will not tolerate. Actuation force ranges roughly 35–65g. None of these is better than the others, and a $40 keyboard and a $200 keyboard can ship the identical switch.

What separates them is everything the switch is mounted in.

The case is the product

Press a key on a cheap mechanical keyboard and the sound is hollow and slightly rattly. Press one on an expensive board and it is a lower, shorter, denser sound. That difference is almost entirely the case, and it is the thing you notice for the next four years.

Material. A plastic case flexes and resonates. Aluminum does not. A CNC-milled aluminum case costs perhaps $40–60 to produce against $4 for injection-molded plastic, and it is the single largest line item in a premium board.

Mounting. How the switch plate attaches to the case determines how the whole assembly moves under a keypress. Tray mount — screwing the plate to posts in the case bottom — is cheap and produces uneven stiffness across the board. Gasket mount suspends the plate on rubber strips, which softens the impact and evens it out. This is genuinely a better typing experience, not an audiophile distinction.

Damping. Foam between the plate and the case, and again beneath the PCB, kills the hollow resonance. It costs almost nothing in materials and a meaningful amount in assembly labor.

Where the diminishing returns start

The curve is steeper than most categories and it flattens hard.

$40–70. Plastic case, tray mount, no damping, usually no software. It types fine. It sounds hollow. For a machine you use occasionally, this is genuinely enough.

$100–160. The bracket where most of the real improvement lives. Aluminum or dense plastic case, gasket mount, some foam, proper firmware with remapping. Almost everything that makes an expensive keyboard feel expensive is present here.

$180–250. Better finish, hot-swap sockets, often analog or Hall-effect switches with adjustable actuation. Real improvements, but incremental against the bracket below.

Above $300. Group buys, limited runs, anodizing colors. You are buying scarcity. Nothing about the typing improves in proportion.

What I would actually buy

If you want the ceiling: the Keychron Q1 HE. Full aluminum case, gasket mount, and Hall-effect switches whose actuation point is adjustable in software — which sounds like a gimmick until you set it shallow for gaming and deep for typing and stop making accidental keypresses. This is the board that ends the search for most people.

If you want most of it for half the money: the Logitech MX Mechanical. Not an enthusiast board, and it will not sound like one. But it is low-profile, connects to three machines at once, and the battery lasts months. For a desk that is primarily for work rather than for keyboards, the multi-device switching is worth more day to day than a gasket mount.

If you type in a shared office, buy linear or tactile switches and check the sound test. This is not a preference question. A clicky keyboard in an open-plan office is a social problem, not an audio one.

The parts nobody mentions

  • Keycap profile matters more than keycap material. Cherry and OEM profiles are sculpted per row; DSA and XDA are flat. Switching profile is a genuine adjustment period; switching from ABS to PBT plastic is not.
  • Hot-swap sockets let you change switches without soldering. Worth having. Most people use them once.
  • Wired versus wireless latency is a settled argument for everything except competitive gaming. Modern 2.4GHz wireless is under 2ms. Bluetooth is not, which is why good wireless boards ship a dongle.
  • A $200 keyboard does not make you type faster. It makes typing more pleasant for several hours a day, which is a real thing to buy and a different claim.

What to check before you buy

  • Case material and mount type, stated explicitly. "Premium build" is not a specification.
  • A sound test of the exact model, not the product line.
  • Standard bottom row, if keycaps matter to you.
  • Wireless protocol — dongle or Bluetooth, and whether both are included.
  • Firmware — QMK/VIA support means the board is remappable forever, not just until the vendor stops shipping software.
