The case for buying last year's laptop
The gap between this year's laptop and last year's is smaller than the gap between their prices. Knowing which generations broke that rule is the whole skill.

Laptop generations used to matter. A machine three years old was visibly slower at ordinary work, ran hot, and lost half a day of battery. That stopped being true somewhere around 2021, and most buying advice has not caught up.
The useful question is no longer "which is newest" but "which generation was the last real jump, and am I already past it".

The numbers behind the shrug
Single-core performance across mainstream laptop processors has been improving at something like 5–10% a year for several generations. Multi-core has done better where core counts rose, but core count only helps work that parallelises — compiling, rendering, running many containers — and most people's day does not.
Put concretely: a machine two years old is somewhere around 10–20% slower on tasks that are already instant. Opening a spreadsheet does not get faster when it was never slow.
Meanwhile the price gap between the current model and the one it replaced is routinely 25–40%, and it appears within weeks of a launch rather than gradually.
That is the whole argument. The performance difference is a rounding error against the price difference.
The generations that actually mattered
Three moments in the last several years were real, and if you are on the wrong side of one, upgrading is worth it.
Apple's move to its own silicon. This was not incremental. Battery life roughly doubled, the machines stopped running hot under normal load, and performance per watt changed category. Anyone still on an Intel Mac is on the wrong side of the only genuinely large laptop jump of the decade.
The shift to 16GB as a sane floor. An 8GB machine in 2026 is constrained by memory long before it is constrained by its processor, and on soldered-memory designs there is no fixing it later. This is the specification most worth paying for, and it is the one most commonly cut to hit a price.
Displays going to 120Hz and mini-LED. Not a performance improvement, but it is the change you see every second the machine is open. Whether it justifies money is genuinely personal in a way CPU benchmarks are not.
Almost everything else — a new processor generation, marginally faster memory, a redesigned chassis — is a spec sheet difference rather than a felt one.
How to buy the previous generation well
Buy the previous model new, not used, when you can. Retailers clear stock at a real discount for weeks after a refresh, and you keep a full warranty. This is the sweet spot and it closes.
Manufacturer-refurbished is the second-best option and is frequently better value than used. It carries a warranty, the battery is usually replaced, and the discount is larger. Independent refurbishers vary enormously; the manufacturer's own program does not.
Specify up, not across. Given a fixed budget, more memory and more storage on last year's model beats this year's model at the base configuration, every time. Memory and storage are the components you cannot change later on most modern machines, and the processor is the one you will not notice.
For anyone who wants a working machine rather than a project, refurbished business laptops are the least glamorous good answer on the market — built for a three-year corporate lifecycle, repairable, and priced against consumer machines that will not last as long.
The battery question
The one component that genuinely degrades on a schedule is the battery, and it is the thing to check before buying anything second-hand.
Lithium cells lose capacity with cycles, not with time on a shelf, so a two-year-old machine that was lightly used may be at 95% of design capacity while a one-year-old machine used daily is at 80%. Every operating system exposes the cycle count and current capacity; check it, and treat "battery health" claims in a listing as unverified until you have.
Replacement is not the disaster it once was — the EU's repairability rules and several US state right-to-repair laws have made batteries and service parts far more available than they were five years ago — but it is a cost to price in.
What to check before you buy
- Memory, and whether it is soldered. This is the specification that decides how long the machine stays pleasant.
- The remaining software support window, in years.
- Battery cycle count and health, on anything not new.
- Whether the storage is replaceable — many thin machines solder it, and a full drive is a dead machine.
- Port selection. A machine that needs a dongle for the thing you do daily is a machine you will resent.
- What the current model actually changed. If the answer is a processor generation, buy the old one.
